The Bluegrass Slow Jam

By Marv Sobelesky

The biggest attraction of Bluegrass Music is that's it's so much fun to get together with friends and play it! Here's what Marv Sobelesky, who hosts the Winlock Slow Jam has to say:

"It's really intimidating for a person to go to their first jam, especially a full speed jam. This makes it very hard for anyone to get started jamming. I have been to numerous festivals and I have seen people walking around with their instrument cases in hand, too scared to jam. So hence, the slow jam was born.

"Our first jam produced about 6 people. Everyone was a nervous wreck to start with. I composed a jam list of tunes that we would work on. After a short while this jam continued to grow and our song list got a little bigger. It's important to have a "set list" of tunes that you are normally going to do every month. This gives the attendees a list to work off of and they can work on these songs. I also add a "Tune of the Month". This is a tune we will be playing at the next months jam. So during the course of the winter, folks will learn about 7 tunes that they didn't know before. It's a great building process."
